Swami Prabhupada: A Brief Story!

Homeless, Penniless and Alone

At the age of 69, homeless, penniless and alone, he arrived in the Lower East Side of New York, in search of ‘better opportunities’ to send his message to the West. Then he went on to teach those confused souls (in drug, sex, LSD) who were looking for real love, real happiness and real spiritual experience.

He authored over 70 volumes on the Krishna tradition, which are highly respected by scholars for their authority, depth, fidelity to the tradition, and clarity. Several of his works are used as textbooks in numerous college courses. His writings have been translated into 76 languages.

69 years of preparation!

Before sailing for America, he had never been outside India. He was penniless and begged one free ticket on a cargo ship, Jaladuta. However, in the next 11 years he travelled many times around the world to send his message, and established 108 temples in all the major cities of the world. The first 69 years of his life were a preparation for these achievements. He forever remains the strength, inspiration and guiding light.

His Life Milestones

Refused to accept his diploma

He weighed the choices carefully. In 1920, after completing his 4-year college, he refused to accept his British diploma. Then in 1922, in his 1st meeting with the spiritual master, he received the call to change the world. Later he looked back, it was no doubt that the purpose of his life was set in 1920, by his spiritual master’s calling.

Accepted The Renounced Order of Life

In 1932, he accepted the renounced order and began to devote his life to growing human consciousness. The story of the next 30 years of his life is the story of a single, growing desire to preach the message worldwide, as his spiritual master had ordered him.

Left India for America at 69

In 1965, at the age of 69, he begged a free passage and boarded a cargo ship, the Jaladhuta, to New York. The journey proved to be treacherous and he suffered 2 heart attacks aboard. After 35 days at sea, he first arrived at a lonely Brooklyn pier with just $7 in Indian rupees and a crate of his translations of sacred Sanskrit texts.

Built a House in Which the Whole World Can Live

In the 11 years that followed, he circled the globe 14 times on lecture tours and established temples, farm communities, a publishing house, and educational institutions around the world. On 14 November 1977, he left his body in Vrindavan, India, at the age of 81.
